What this paper is about

Edit What this paper is about Content

Welcome to ALPSS301, a work-integrated learning (WIL) paper that offers students an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in community and workplace settings.

If you have any questions about this paper or a placement, please contact the Work-Integrated Learning Administrator, Vanessa (Vee) McLean, in the first instance.

This is an applied professional practice and work-related paper that enables students to employ their disciplinary knowledge and skills in fulfillment of tasks/projects/roles for a client. A range of professional practices can be credited toward this paper.

Students may either:

1. work off-site for an approved external client, in a stipulated role, or

2. fulfill a project for an approved external client (anyone beyond the immediate programme under which WIL is being taken), working independently to complete a task or set of tasks.

Some WIL opportunities will be available through the University MyWIL system, but students are more likely to need to secure their own placement opportunities which the paper convenor can assess for approval and credit toward the paper. Students may be able to use roles/projects/tasks that have already been completed, but this would require prior approval from the paper convenor. Assessments may differ for students in these circumstances.

Edit How this paper will be taught Content

This is an independent study paper that is completed under the supervision of a staff member from the Divisional of Arts, Law, Psychology and Social Sciences (ALPSS). There are no timetabled lectures or tutorials for this paper. Resources are available in Moodle. You and your supervisor will determine how regularly you communicate.

This paper is open to all students enrolled in the BA, BMus, and BSocSc Degrees, for all Majors, excluding the BEP and Social Work.

While students are able to add the paper in MyWaikato to their enrolment, there are some necessary steps that need to be fulfilled BEFORE full enrolment is finalized. These include submitting a proposal for a placement or project and obtaining approval from the paper convenor. For off-site placements, completion of documentation for all parties involved (the University, the external organization, and the student) is also required before enrolment can be completed.Make an appointment to see the WIL Administrator, Vee McLean (vmclean@waikato.ac.nz) if you would like to discuss your options first.
